On 29th July 2023, Serengeti Energy’s Nkhotakota I project, a 21MW solar PV power plant in Malawi achieved commercial operation (COD). The now operational solar power project in the Nkhotakota District, eastern Malawi marks the completion of phase 1 of the Nkhotakota project which was scheduled to be executed in two phases. The grid connected solar installation represents a significant step forward in Malawi’s energy landscape as it will support additional power generation capacity for the country against its growing demand.

Arguably the toughest project Serengeti Energy has developed since its inception in 2013, the company is proud to have overcome the challenges thrown at it and to have brought it to the finish line. Its success does not only go to Serengeti Energy’s resilient and dedicated team but also to the undying support from our investors KfW, STOA, Proparco, Norfund, Swedfund and NDF, and project implementation partners. The national and local governments of Malawi and the community in which the project is located have played a vital role towards making Nkhotakota 1 a reality. Serengeti Energy is looking forward to collaborating with The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) in the refinancing of the project before end of the year.

Serengeti Energy’s Co-CEO Wilfred van den Bos remarked, “The construction completion and now commercial operation of the Nkhotakota 1 solar power plant symbolizes our unwavering commitment to sustainable renewable energy solutions and our dedication to empowering communities with clean, reliable electricity. We look forward to the continued collaboration with our partners and stakeholders on phase 2 of the project and accelerate the development of Malawi.”

Serengeti Energy’s Country Director, Patrick Silungwe added, “We are honoured to contribute to Malawi’s electricity supply and ease the recent power generation shortfalls that we have experienced as a country. We thank the Malawian government, our partners, and the local community for their support throughout this journey.” “This milestone aligns with the Malawian government’s electrification goals and its targets to increase the adoption of renewable energy in the national energy mix. We will continue to work closely with local agencies and stakeholders in growing the grid network and grid stability in the country ” concluded Solomon Njonjo, Serengeti Energy Co-CEO.
